The third of the new Astute Class attack submarines, Artful, has officially been handed over to the Royal Navy. Until now the submarine was owned by Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), the MOD’s body responsible for procuring and supporting equipment for the Armed Forces. The boat and her crew will now be added to the Royal Navy Fleet alongside the Navy’s other units. She is due to be commissioned in March 2016, after completing her sea trials

First flight of the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver.

The Curtiss SB2C Helldiver was a carrier-based dive bomber aircraft produced for the United States Navy during World War II. It replaced the Douglas SBD Dauntless in US Navy service. The SB2C was much faster than the SBD it replaced.

Crew nicknames for the aircraft included the Big-Tailed Beast (or just the derogatory Beast), Two-Cee and Son-of-a-Bitch 2nd Class (after its designation and partly because of its reputation for having difficult handling characteristics). Neither pilots nor aircraft carrier skippers seemed to like it.

Delays marred its production—by the time the A-25 Shrike variant for the USAAF was deployed in late 1943, the Army Air Forces no longer had a need for a thoroughbred dive bomber. Poor handling of the aircraft was another factor that hampered its service introductions, both the British Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force cancelled substantial orders.

The Truman Committee investigated Helldiver production and turned in a scathing report, which eventually led to the beginning of the end for Curtiss. Thankfully, problems with the Helldiver were eventually ironed out, and in spite of its early problems, the aircraft was flown through the last two years of the Pacific War with a fine combat record….

This is the North Point Lighthouse in Milwaukee"s Lake Park along the bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan. This was not what I was planning on shooting but wow, the light was so sublime that I just had to stop. It was almost as if the sun, clouds, and lighthouse were calling to me – Hey, take the picture!! It was quite windy and cold. Not the normal cold we usually have in mid-December here, but cold enough. Especially if you are only wearing a long-sleeved fleece and a hoodie that the wind goes right through.

But not one to ignore the obvious call to stop, I stopped and shot. And, boy, am I glad I did.

The Fort Gratiot Lighthouse, built in 1829, is the oldest lighthouse in Michigan. The tower was originally 65 feet tall with an Argon lamp. As traffic on the Great Lakes increased, by the 1850"s there was a need for better navigational aids. In 1857 a Fourth order Fresnel Lens was added. In 1862 the tower was raised to 82 feet tall to accommodate the Fresnel len"s superior range.
