While not nearly as visually impressive as many of New Zealand's many other waterfalls, Browne Falls is the country's tallest. Dropping over 2600 feet from Browne Lake to the waters of Doubtful Sound, with the initial drop consisting of a single, long, sinuous horsetailing fall of over 1600 feet alone. The falls can only be seen by boat or aircraft as they descend into the deep waters of the fjord where no roads or trails access. Because the lake feeding the falls has essentially no feeder streams, the volume of water running over the falls drops considerably in the dry season, but it flows perennially. As much rainfall as this part of New Zealand recieves however, visitors are ensured a poignant sight at almost any time of year. Source: worldwaterfalldatabase.com

On Saturday the 31st of May, approximately 1500 personnel from Air Force and Army units at RAAF Base Amberley brought colour, music, tradition, pomp and ceremony to the Ipswich CBD when they exercised their right of Freedom of Entry to the city. A highlight of the parade was a flypast comprising of four F/A-18F Super Hornets, a C-17 Globemaster strategic airlifter and a KC-30 Multi Role Tanker Transport, representing each type of operational aircraft based at RAAF Amberley. HERCULES FLYING PARATROOP TRIAL OFF BARRENJOEY HEADS

Royal Australian Air Force originally shared:

HERCULES FLYING PARATROOP TRIAL OFF BARRENJOEY HEADS

Air Force seeks to advise the public of a trial which will take place off Barrenjoey Heads from June 23-26.

During the trials, a mannequin dressed in a Defence uniform will be trailed from the cargo ramp and the rear paratroop doors of a C-130J Hercules in-flight.

The purpose of these flights is to assist the further development of the paratroop retrieval system. The trial flights will involve the Hercules flying at an altitude of 300 metres, approximately nine kilometres off Barrenjoey Heads.

These flights will be conducted on the mornings of June 23-24, but further flights may take place on June 25-26 if required. The mannequin may also be dropped into the water.

Wing Commander Stephen Crawford is Commanding Officer of Air Movements Training and Development Unit (AMTDU), which is conducting the trials.

“Airborne delivery of paratroops is an important role for the Hercules, and each aircraft can deliver 92 paratroops,” Wing Commander Crawford said.

“We frequently practice this role, both to train Air Force and Army personnel, and to rehearse in major exercises.”

When jumping from a Hercules, paratroops are typically attached to a ‘static-line’ inside the Hercules, which automatically deploys their parachute as they leave the aircraft.

There is the risk however that the static-line may not disengage properly, or that the paratrooper is otherwise caught as they exit the aircraft.

“Instances of these malfunctions are extremely rare,” Wing Commander Crawford said.

“It still remains a requirement for us to have a safe and effective means of recovering paratroops, and it’s something we’ve developed and prepared for over 30 years.”

“The trials that we are conducting off of Barrenjoey Head demonstrates our commitment to refining these practices, and ensuring the safety of Defence members.”

Air Force Girls Flight Camp - RAAF Base Amberley

Air Force Flight Camp is an initiative to increase capability through diversity and female recruitment. The camp, attended by seventeen girls aged 16 to 18 years, was held at RAAF Base Amberley from 10 – 14 June, and provided a hands-on, risk free opportunity for the girls to experience aviation roles (particularly pilot) within the Air Force. The girls had the opportunity to engage with current serving women and were exposed to Air Force life, fitness standards, leadership and adventure training.
