Crew Rescued From Sinking Cargo Ship in Black Sea

A general cargo ship carrying timber from Romania to Turkey has sunk in the Black Sea but not before all eleven crewmembers safely abandoned the vessel in life rafts.
The Executive Maritime Administration of Bulgaria reports that they received a distress signal at approximately 06:00 Saturday from the 2864 dwt  MV Ellund, which ran into trouble while sailing off the coast of the Durankulak, a small village located on the Black Sea in northeastern Bulgaria.
The report said that all eleven crew members escaped the vessel and were rescued in the vicinity.
An effort was made to save the Ellund, but the vessel sank at about 16:30 local time reportedly after the cargo shifted.
The Executive Maritime Administration report say the ship’s cargo, mostly timber, is floating in the vicinity, but there is no immediate danger to the marine environment.
The MV Ellund was built in 1982 and is flagged in St. Kitts & Nevis.
An investigation into the incident is pending.
