What: Up to nine Hawk 127 jets from Number 76 Squadron will conduct a flying and tactical display, followed by a simulated airfield attack profile. These activities are part of the graduation ceremony for Number 148 and 149 Introductory Fighter Course.

Where: RAAF Base Williamtown, Medowie Road, Williamtown, NSW.

When: Midday – Wednesday, 16 December.

Background:
The Introductory Fighter Course prepares trainee fighter pilots for the step-up to RAAF’s operational fighter jet variants, the F/A-18A Hornet, F/A-18F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler.

A significant part of the Introductory Fighter Course is conducted by 76 Squadron at RAAF Base Williamtown using the Hawk 127 aircraft. The 76 Squadron phase of the course consists of six months’ intensive fighter pilot and weapon system officer training.

Wednesday’s display will consist of three aircraft conducting an aircraft flying and tactical display followed by 6 aircraft conducting a low level airfield attack profile. All flypasts are subject to change due to operational requirements.

Noise reduction and the environment are vital considerations in the planning and conduct of military flying. Air Force appreciates the support it receives from the Newcastle community during this flypast.

Information on aircraft noise and current flying activities is available at www.defence.gov.au/aircraftnoise or by calling 1300 DEFENCE (1300 333 362) and asking to be connected to RAAF Base Williamtown.

A Royal Australian Air Force C-17A Globemaster recently joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force for a trial loading of the RNZAF NH90.
The NH90 is an advanced medium utility helicopter, capable of undertaking a wide variety of roles in New Zealand and overseas.

Interoperability between RAAF and RNZAF could be useful in the event of a regional disaster, and the visit provided an opportunity to trial loading the NH90 inside the C-17A Globemaster.

Commissioned on 3 June 1945, Lake Champlain did not participate in World War II, but did serve as a transport, bringing troops home from Europe as part of Operation Magic Carpet. Like many of her sister ships, she was decommissioned shortly after the end of the war, but was modernized and recommissioned in the early 1950s, and redesignated as an attack carrier (CVA). She participated in the Korean War but spent the rest of her career in the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Mediterranean. In the late 1950s, she was redesignated as an antisubmarine carrier (CVS). She was the prime recovery ship for the first manned Mercury and for the third manned Gemini (Gemini V) space missions.
Lake Champlain had a unique modernization history. She was the only Essex-class ship to receive the SCB-27 conversion, which was a rebuild of the superstructure, flight deck and other features, but not also receive the SCB-125 conversion, which would have given her an angled flight deck and hurricane bow. Therefore she had the distinction of being the last operational US aircraft carrier with an axial flight deck.
Lake Champlain was decommissioned in 1966 and sold for scrap in 1972.
