The world's fastest ship, Tasmanian-built ferry Francisco, has arrived in Wellington for refuelling.
The 99-metre-long wave-piercing catamaran achieved a world record speed of 58.1 knots - about 107kmh - during sea trials off the Tasmanian coast on June 15 this year.
It was built by Australian ferry builder Incat Tasmania for South American company Buquebus, which will operate the ferry on the River Plate between Buenos Aires in Argentina and Montevideo in Uruguay.
Francisco can carry 1000 people, 150 cars and boasts a luxurious fit-out including a 1100sqm duty-free shop.
The ship left Hobart for Wellington two days ago and is taking on fuel at AQ3 on Aotea Quay.
It is expected to sail out tomorrow, weather pending.
