Trials on ferry delaying return from Singapore

The Cook Strait ferry Aratere has developed further problems in Singapore, delaying its return to Wellington.

When it left Wellington for Singapore on February 8, former KiwiRail chief executive Jim Quinn expected it would be back on Cook Strait by early May.

But its troubles appear to be continuing in Singapore with maritime sources saying electronics problems were now delaying the vessel's return.

Aratere completed its second dry docking a week ago for the installation of two new rudder stocks, two new propeller shafts and a refit of two propellers.

KiwiRail spokeswoman Helen Corrigan said sea trials were held last week and the ferry had stayed put so faults identified in those trials could be fixed.

"These faults did not relate to any electronic systems," she said.
