When he arrived back in the UK he applied for a transfer to the New Zealand Navy because there were more job opportunities. The Powers family arrived in Auckland in 1957.
“There was no accommodation for us at the navy base so we were looking for a house instead,” Judy said. “Julia and I did not get to Auckland until April 1958.”
Soon after moving they welcomed their second child (Debbie), then Phillip in 1960, Gregory in 1963, Sarah in 1966, Ronald in 1968 and, finally, Josephine in 1970.
“Sarah was the last one to be born before Sean retired from the navy in 1967,” said Judy. “It was the same story as when I had Julia. He saw me in the nursing home, then he was off for nine months overseas again.
