NAVY hopefuls will be put through their paces in Ramsgate this week, when three Universities Royal Naval Units (URNU) will be stationed in the Royal Harbour marina.
The ships, which each carry a full-time Royal Navy crew of five and up to 12 university students, to help youngsters put what they have learned at drill nights into practice.
HMS Example, HMS Blazer and HMS Puncher are all scheduled to moor in Ramsgate between March 29 and March 31 as they make stop-offs at several different ports.
Commanding officer of HMS Blazer, Lieutenant Amie Jackson, said: “Be under no illusion about the intensity of this deployment, the students will certainly be put through their paces.
“There is no better experience for them than to get to sea and put theory into practice in whatever situations or conditions are thrown at them.”
Although ships will not be open to the public during their visits, residents will have the chance to talk to crews at the harbour about life in the Navy.
The URNU says its mission is to: "educate a wide spectrum of high calibre undergraduates who show potential as society's future leaders and opinion formers in order to better inform them of the need for and role of the Royal Navy, and to develop awareness of career opportunities in the service”.
Each URNU ship is commanded by a Royal Navy lieutenant who is responsible for 51 undergraduates who each join the URNU as RN Reservists for their three or four years at university.
