Today marks the 25th anniversary of when the Exxon Valdez grounded on Bligh Reef, rupturing the tanker’s hull and spilling some 11 million gallons oil into Alaska’s Prince Williams Sound in what was the worst U.S. offshore oil spill prior to the 2010 Gulf oil spill.
Below is a clip of a video produced by NOAA in 2009, titled Hindsight and Foresight: 20 Years After the Exxon Valdez Spill, which offers a great look back at the events of March 24, 1989 and the days, months and years that followed.

It really goes without saying how disastrous and consequential this event ended up being. Here’s another great video from NOAA on what has been done over the last 25 years to prevent a disaster such as this from happening again:
