PAIR of amphibious Royal Naval warships left Plymouth today bound for Europe’s largest military exercise off the coast of Scotland.
The ships were loaded up with military vehicles, which will be used by Taunton-based 40 Commando in the Join Warrior project from March 25 to April 12.
Ships, submarines, aircraft and ground troops from the UK, US, Turkish, German, Belgian, French, Dutch and Danish militaries will be taking part, battling each other at sea, in the air and on land in an area stretching from the Irish Sea, north to Cape Wrath and east to the Moray Firth.
Devonport Naval Base is playing its role by supplying ships to deliver the land forces.
Captain Tom Baker, Royal Marines, 3 Commando Amphibious Operations Officer, said: “We are loading military vehicles onto the amphibious ships RFA Lyme Bay and HMS Bulwark for use in Joint Warrior 2014 – a major multinational tri-service exercise of the West Coast of Scotland. This is bread and butter stuff for the Royal Marines of 1 Assault Squadron.
Malcolm Pollock, Devonport’s Base Services Manager, said: “We are using 4 Slip to transfer Royal Marine vehicles, which is great stuff. Today these vehicles are embarking in RFA Lyme Bay, moored in Plymouth Sound, ahead of an amphibious exercise. It is tremendous to see 4 Slip being used to support this embarkation, and it shows off some of the diverse activity that is routinely managed across the Naval Base.”
The Royal Navy haave 12 ships taking part, ranging from amphibious ships, destroyers, frigates and Mine Counter Measures Vessels, all of which will use Joint Warrior to prepare for their imminent deployments to the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Middle East.
3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines, including force elements from 24 Commando Engineer Regiment and 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery, will embark nearly 1,300 Commandos across the ships in order that they can undertake a large scale amphibious assault on a beach in Cumbria.
