This weekend is going to be busy at HM Naval Base with the arrival of three Royal Navy ships. HMS Westminster arrived yesterday morning, HMS Brocklesby will arrive today and HMS Daring tomorrow.
After a busy six month operational deployment in the Indian Ocean and Gulf Region, HMS Westminster is heading home after handing over her duties to sister ship HMS Somerset. She will be in Gibraltar for a couple of days to top up on supplies and give the crew some well-deserved rest and recuperation.
Minehunter HMS Brockelsby is heading out to the Mediterranean as part of the Standing NATO Mine Counter Measures Group 2 (SNMCMG2). She will also take the opportunity to top up on supplies before heading out on her four month deployment.
Type 45 HMS Daring is also heading home after a mammoth nine month deployment. After leaving her home port in May 2013 HMS Daring has called at 21 different ports and sailed more than 38,000 miles. She has crossed the Atlantic Ocean, supported anti-piracy operations in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Aden, tracked ballistic targets in the Pacific Ocean and provided immediate humanitarian support to the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan.
She more recently hit the news with a romantic heartfelt message which was displayed on her flight deck on Valentine’s Day. The message was sent back to loved ones as a reminder of how much the 200 men and women of HMS Daring miss their loved ones when on deployment, and are very much looking forward to being reunited with them in Portsmouth in a few days.
All three visiting ships will conduct sovereignty patrols in British Gibraltar Territorial Waters.
