Based on the Australian Register of Historic Vessels, with her arrival at last in Port Adelaide, the CITY OF ADELAIDE is now the oldest ship in Australia. The City of Adelaide, on mv Palanpur, transitted past ASC where the massive AEGIS tower of the destroyer Hobart loomed over the top of the shipyard buildings. The destroyer Hobart is under construction at the TechPort shipbuilding facility in South Australia. The occurrence was more poignant as today, 3 February 2014, also marked the date of the keel-laying ceremony for Hobart's sister-ship Brisbane that is also being constructed in a three-ship build at the site. South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill dropped in to witness the activities as the Palanpur arrived at Berth 18 (background) in Port Adelaide. The Premier was on his way to attend the keel-laying ceremony for the new destroyer. The ancient clipper has had a chequered past, in latter years she was a naval club berthed in Glasgow and was known to thousands as the sv CARRICK. She sank in Princes Dock Glasgow after the club closed and ended up at the Maritime Museum in Irvine, Scotland. However she rotted there for many years and now it looks as though willing hands and money are set to restore her to her former glory after her long voyage on the deck of the freighter that has borne her to Australia. %trackship% |
