Detyens Shipyards to Revamp USNS Leroy Grumman

Detyens Shipyards, Inc., a naval facility specializing in emergency ship repair, ship conversion, and dry docking, has won a USD $9.6 million contract for a 55-calendar day regular overhaul and dry docking of fleet replenishment oiler USNS Leroy Grumman (T-AO 195).

The contract includes options, which, if exercised, would bring the overall value of the contract to over USD 11 million.
USNS Leroy Grumman, pertains to a Henry J. Kaiser-class of replenishment oilers and is operated by the U.S. Navy’s Military Sealift Command, providing fuel to Navy ships at sea and jet fuel to aircraft assigned to aircraft carriers.
The ship will undergo port main engine clutch and coupling overhaul, antenna cleaning, helicopter deck sprinkler and hose reel piping renewal and flight deck non-skid renewal. The contract provides for inspection and refurbishing of fall blocks and fairlead sheaves, along with cleaning of the hull and its painting.
The oiler’s overhaul will be performed in Charleston, South Carolina, and is expected to be completed by April 2014.
