Hull-bound Cargo Ship Rescued In Storm
ABIS CALAIS towed safely to port, crew well...
The Spanish maritime rescue authority today said that a stricken cargo vessel, the Dutch-owned ABIS CALAIS, had been safely towed into port at Ferro at around half past twelve (local time) today.

The ship had been on a voyage between Leixoes in Portugal to the English port of Hull laden with wood pellets the authority said.

Last night a towline had been attached to the ship but this proved difficult to maintain in the worsening conditions and indeed the vessel at one point looked as though it was heading for the mainland coast and grounding, prompting rescue helicopters to be brought in but these proved un-necessary.

This morning the Spanish rescue authorities had co-ordinated salvage of the vessel and a successful tow began after failed attempts by commercial operators brought in by the vessels owners.

The cargo ship had reported problems with its propellors on Monday.

All eight crew, Dutch, Ukraine and Filipino, were reported safe and well at the port today.
