| Over the weekend the City of London will play host to the German Navy vessel, FGS Schleswig-Holstein. The Type 123 Brandenburg Class Frigate came alongside today (Friday) and will remain in London until early next week. It is anticipated that the Schleswig-Holstein will join the Royal Navy’s Response Force Task Group later in the year when it deploys on Cougar 14 – the annual RFTG workout that visits several countries in the Mediterranean and Gulf region and exercises alongside their Armed Forces. Cougar 14 will be the first year that a NATO partner ship will travel, and exercise, with the deployment. Royal Navy Regional Commander, Commodore Martin Atherton, said: “It is always a pleasure to welcome a vessel from the German Navy to a British port. We are particularly pleased to see FGS Schleswig-Holstein as she is expected to be an integral part of Cougar 14. Her participation in Cougar 14 reinforces how readily NATO partners can operate in a maritime environment and demonstrates partner adaptability.” Cougar has taken place every year since 2011, following the formation of the RFTG under the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review. It aims to hone the RFTG’s world class maritime skills thousands of miles from home through a series of exercises with key allies.
