Comments (0)MINEHUNTER HMS Grimsby will be docking in its “home town” on Friday, with the crew set to take on Grimsby’s police officers in a charity football match.

The ship, which last visited in February 2012, will arrive at about 9.30am, spending four days at the Royal Dock, and will be open for visitors to take a look around for free between 11am and 3pm on Saturday.

At 3pm on Sunday, the crew will take on officers from Humberside Police at Bradley Pitches to raise money for Wish Upon A Star and North East Lincolnshire’s mayoral charities.

Before the match the crew will attend a service at Grimsby Minster, and the ship sets sail again on Monday afternoon.

On the Friday, there will also be a civic reception for the crew at Grimsby Town Hall.

During the stay, a number of local groups and organisations will be given tours of the 600-tonne vessel, including students from the Grimsby Institute, while a number of pre-invited guests will be given a “capability demonstration” on board on Saturday night.

Lieutenant Commander Simon Kelly, HMS Grimsby’s Commanding Officer, said: “There is much anticipation among the ship’s company for this visit to our twin town.

“Any port visit is welcome, but bringing our ship into our affiliated port is a particular pleasure and we are looking forward to renewing our already strong links.”

Tomorrow at 7pm, prior to the ship’s arrival, former Wybers Wood Primary students Lieutenant Dan Marsden, of the Royal Navy, and Corporal Oliver Coulbeck, of the Royal Marines, will be among the speakers at a free talk at the Grimsby Institute.

Oliver survived being shot in the head and being blown up by an IED, both in Afghanistan, and the pair will be sharing some of their experiences.

He said: “For both of us it is a chance to explain to the audience what being part of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines is all about – whether that be providing humanitarian assistance as we have so recently done in the Philippines, preventing conflict or providing security at sea, amongst many others.”

The football match on Sunday is free to attend, but there will be a charity collection on the day.

Access to the ship on Saturday is free.
