US Coast Guard Assists Sinking Cargo Ship off Guam

The US Coast Guard saved twenty-four crewmembers from a sinking cargo ship Rich Forest near Guam on 19 January 2014.

The Coast Guard received report of flooding from the ship, which was carrying logs en route to China. The ship’s generators had failed and the ship was taking on 160 tons of water per hour, as the Chinese crew reported.

The crew entered life rafts and abandoned the sinking ship.

The US Coast Guard sent two cutters named Assateague and Sequoia from Guam, but they were 18 hours away.

All survivors were rescued from life rafts, without incident by the AMVER Vessel Sunshine at 4:40pm.
