HMS Somerset Calls at Gibraltar for ReplenishmentHMS SOMERSET CREW

The Royal Navy Type 23 frigate HMS Somerset dropped her anchor in Gibraltar on the way to beginning a deployment East of Suez. The deployment comes in the aftermath of HMS Somerset’s £21 million pound refit, which renewed her operational capability and restored her full readiness.

 
Whilst in Gibraltar HMS Somerset conducted replenishment of essential stores and availed of the opportunity to enjoy in the hospitality of the locals.
HMS Somerset’s commanding officer, Commander Mike Smith, said: “This is HMS Somerset’s first port of call and I know that all members of my ship’s company are very much looking forward to enjoying the local hospitality and facilities that Gibraltar has to offer.”
Over the next six months, the British frigate will be working in support of EU, NATO and coalition forces to undertake security patrols across the Mediterranean Sea, Indian Ocean and Gulf Region. Her main tasks will be to deter, disrupt and suppress piracy and the unlawful use of the sea in order to secure freedom of navigation on critical trade routes.
