Brazil Navy Sends Another Frigate To Aid UN Forces In Lebanon

Brazil’s Navy watched its frigate, the “Union,” depart from the shores of Rio de Janeiro on Monday on its way to Lebanon to contribute to the maritime support forces part of the United Nation’s Interim Force, known as UNIFIL.
The Union will be replacing the Brazilian frigate “Constitution,” which has been running maritime support with UNIFIL.
The newly departed frigate scheduled to arrive in Beirut on July 11, is carrying with it an aircraft that will be used in the U.N.’s maritime task force.
Ship’s commander, Commandant Gustavo Garriga described the Union’s mission.
UNIFIL was first created by the U.N.’s Security Council in 1978 to confirm that Israeli forces had withdrawn from Lebanon and help restore Lebanese authority in the area.
Since then UNIFIL has also taken on the responsibility of monitoring hostilities, supporting Lebanese troops in the country’s south, and ensuring humanitarian access to civilian populations.
After saying good-byes to his family, crew member Luiz Fernando talked about how his military service and assignment in Lebanon is all about helping to support his family.
Brazil’s volunteered vessel will continue the responsibility of its predecessor, the Constitution, as the principal vessel in a multinational pack of nine, which includes three German ships, two Bangladeshi ships, one from Turkey, one from Greece, and one Indonesian.
The Union is scheduled to return to Rio in March 2014.
UNIFIL has spent 35 years watching Israelis and Lebanese wage wars, and even though the peacekeepers have limited military means to prevent conflict, they are there to represent the will of the Security Council.
