US Coast Guard Assists 4 Boaters in Niagara River
A rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Buffalo, N.Y., assisted four people in the Niagara River Tuesday afternoon after their boat struck bottom and became disabled.
This is the second assist the crew of Station Buffalo conducted in a 12-hour period.
At 11:28 a.m., search-and-rescue controllers at Coast Guard Sector Buffalo received a report that a 24-foot recreational vessel with four people onboard was disabled and drifting near the Peace Bridge in Buffalo.
A rescue boatcrew from Station Buffalo launched aboard a 25-foot Response Boat-Small to assist.
The rescue boatcrew located the disabled vessel and placed them in side-tow. The owner reported that the vessel had become disabled after running aground on the Bird Island Reef.
The rescue boatcrew took the disabled vessel to Harry’s Harbour in Buffalo, where they conducted a post-rescue boarding and found no discrepancies.
There are no reports of pollution.
The names and hometowns of the boaters are not being released, and there is no Coast Guard imagery available.
The Coast Guard reminds boaters to become familiar with the area in which they will be boating. Having up-to-date navigational tools such as paper charts, U.S. Chart No. 1 and light lists can help boaters be aware of potentially hazardous areas.
