USS Mason

Guided-missile destroyer USS Mason’s (DDG 87) Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) committee is helping Sailors stay entertained by sponsoring activities both in port and at sea during the command’s 2013-2014 deployment.

Mason MWR President Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Mechanical) 2nd Class Ramona Ross said his goal is to keep the crew’s morale at a high level.

“During port visits, we give the crew the best possible options for experiencing the unique cultures of the country we visit and ensure that entertainment for the crew is available,” said Ross.

Mason’s MWR provides free and low-cost activities that include talent shows, picnics on Mason’s flight deck, and port tours.

“The Petra tour in Jordan was interesting,” said Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Mechanical) 2nd class Anita Preetam. “It was amazing to see a whole city built from stone. There is so much history here, and I would definitely do it again. Not too many people can say that they’ve been here.”

Operations Specialist Seaman Apprentice Brandon Dalton said he enjoyed a tour of the Dead Sea.

“It was surprising to be able to float in the water so easily,” said Dalton. “But my favorite events have been the steel beach picnics, because it gives the crew a chance to hang out and relax after a busy week”.

Funds are raised by collecting a portion of every purchase in the ship store and vending machines. MWR also coordinates fundraisers like the popular ‘pie-in-the-face’ and event.

“I couldn’t wait for the pie in the face event,” said Interior Communications Electrician 1st Class Jimmy Rodriguez. “It’s a great way to show your favorite person how much you appreciate them.”

MWR regularly polls the crew for ideas which allows the Sailors to contribute to planning upcoming entertainment and events.

“I just love seeing people have fun,” said Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Heidi Jiminez, MWR vice president. “I enjoy putting a smile on someone’s face, and love setting up events so that we can have healthy fun while out to sea.”

Mason is currently deployed as part of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet Area of Responsibility.
