Two Air Force aircraft will feature in the Opening Ceremony for the 2015 Junior World Gliding Championships in Narromine on Monday, 30 November.
A C-130J Hercules transport aircraft will make three flypasts of Payten Park at 6.30pm, flying at a minimum altitude of 75 metres.
At 7pm, a solo PC-9/A for the Roulettes aerobatic team will then conduct a five-minute solo routine that will include loops, a series of rolls, and an inverted pass. The PC-9/A will operate down to an altitude of 150 metres.
The Junior World Gliding Championships will bring the world’s best gliders under the age of 26 to Narromine from 30 November to 12 December.
Air Vice-Marshal Gavin Turnbull, Air Commander Australia, said Air Force was proud to be providing flypasts in support of this event.
“Gliding is an important part of how many Air Force pilots had their start in aviation,” Air Vice-Marshal Turnbull said.
“Fundamentals of flight learned during gliding have served many of our pilots later in their career, whether they’re now flying a large aircraft or fast jets.”
Narromine also has strong historical links to Air Force, being the site of No. 5 Elementary Flying Training School during the Second World War.
“I am also tremendously pleased to see an aviation event of such a global nature being held in Narromine,” Air Vice-Marshal Turnbull said.
“Air Force pilots flew Tiger Moths from Narromine for 50 hours, conducting their first solo flights, before progressing on to more advanced aircraft.”
“More than 70 years on, the world’s best young glider pilots are congregating at Narromine, and I hope will pursue a life-long career in aviation.”
